{"id":12517,"date":"2011-11-13T07:51:17","date_gmt":"2011-11-13T11:51:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shadowmanor.com\/blog\/?p=12517"},"modified":"2011-10-07T14:01:00","modified_gmt":"2011-10-07T18:01:00","slug":"poetry-sunday-11","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shadowmanor.com\/blog\/?p=12517","title":{"rendered":"Poetry Sunday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>The Haunted Oak<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Pray why are you so bare, so bare,<br \/>\n   Oh, bough of the old oak-tree;<br \/>\nAnd why, when I go through the shade you throw,<br \/>\n   Runs a shudder over me?<\/p>\n<p>My leaves were green as the best, I trow,<br \/>\n   And sap ran free in my veins,<br \/>\nBut I say in the moonlight dim and weird<br \/>\n   A guiltless victim&#8217;s pains.<\/p>\n<p>They&#8217;d charged him with the old, old crime,<br \/>\n   And set him fast in jail:<br \/>\nOh, why does the dog howl all night long,<br \/>\n   And why does the night wind wail?<\/p>\n<p>He prayed his prayer and he swore his oath,<br \/>\n   And he raised his hand to the sky;<br \/>\nBut the beat of hoofs smote on his ear,<br \/>\n   And the steady tread drew nigh.<\/p>\n<p>Who is it rides by night, by night,<br \/>\n   Over the moonlit road?<br \/>\nAnd what is the spur that keeps the pace,<br \/>\n   What is the galling goad?<\/p>\n<p>And now they beat at the prison door,<br \/>\n   &#8220;Ho, keeper, do not stay!<br \/>\nWe are friends of him whom you hold within,<br \/>\n   And we fain would take him away<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;From those who ride fast on our heels<br \/>\n   With mind to do him wrong;<br \/>\nThey have no care for his innocence,<br \/>\n   And the rope they bear is long.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>They have fooled the jailer with lying words,<br \/>\n   They have fooled the man with lies;<br \/>\nThe bolts unbar, the locks are drawn,<br \/>\n   And the great door open flies.<\/p>\n<p>Now they have taken him from the jail,<br \/>\n   And hard and fast they ride,<br \/>\nAnd the leader laughs low down in his throat,<br \/>\n   As they halt my trunk beside.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, the judge, he wore a mask of black,<br \/>\n   And the doctor one of white,<br \/>\nAnd the minister, with his oldest son,<br \/>\n   Was curiously bedight.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, foolish man, why weep you now?<br \/>\n   &#8216;Tis but a little space,<br \/>\nAnd the time will come when these shall dread<br \/>\n   The mem&#8217;ry of your face.<\/p>\n<p>I feel the rope against my bark,<br \/>\n   And the weight of him in my grain,<br \/>\nI feel in the throe of his final woe<br \/>\n   The touch of my own last pain.<\/p>\n<p>And never more shall leaves come forth<br \/>\n   On the bough that bears the ban;<br \/>\nI am burned with dread, I am dried and dead,<br \/>\n   From the curse of a guiltless man.<\/p>\n<p>And ever the judge rides by, rides by,<br \/>\n   And goes to hunt the deer,<br \/>\nAnd ever another rides his soul<br \/>\n   In the guise of a mortal fear.<\/p>\n<p>And ever the man he rides me hard,<br \/>\n   And never a night stays he;<br \/>\nFor I feel his curse as a haunted bough,<br \/>\n   On the trunk of a haunted tree.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212; Paul Laurence Dunbar<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Haunted Oak Pray why are you so bare, so bare, Oh, bough of the old oak-tree; And why, when I go through the shade you throw, Runs a shudder over me?
