As I’ve mentioned many times previously I’m a fan of steampunk; I love the vibe of mass-produced mixed with one-off craftsmanship in the alternate-history technology that’s such a hallmark of the genre. If you’re similarly a fan, here are some links you might enjoy.<\/p>\n
Steampunk Couture<\/a> – Hand-crafted clothing focusing on “Neo-Victorian, Sci-Fi and Shabby Chic fashion.” (They also have a Facebook page<\/a>)<\/p>\n Ruffled recently featured a gorgeous steampunk wedding<\/a> with heaps of drool-worthy photos. Offbeat Bride also has a number of steampunk wedding<\/a> ideas, including clockwork cakes<\/a>, thematic invitations<\/a>, and much else.<\/p>\n Girl Genius<\/a> is a “gaslamp fantasy comic” penned by Phil and Kaja Foglio.<\/p>\n The Steampunk Home<\/a> is a blog is devoted to home d\u00e9cor that combines “the scientific romanticism of the Victorians with our real present and imagined future.”<\/p>\n Aether Emporium<\/a> bills itself as a “onestop resource and archive for all things Steampunk.” It’s a splendid resource, and it appears that they’ve recently switched over to a wiki format.<\/p>\n Steampunk Pics<\/a> is no longer updating, but their archive is still available. There are images of steampunk items (such as “ray guns”) and real vintage photos with a steampunk feel (like Zeppelins floating over cities).<\/p>\n The Steampunk Workshop<\/a> offers some great project ideas, plus resource links and lots of photographs.<\/p>\n Antipodean Steampunk Adventures<\/a> is a personal blog: “Follow the adventures of the maduncle as he endeavours to make contact with the rest of the steampunk universe from the outer colonies.”<\/p>\n Datamancer’s<\/a> subhead is “Prestidigital Datamancery & Paraphrenalic Technofetishism,” and just try saying that three times fast. They feature a lot of technical art and gear, and will do some custom work.<\/p>\n Coilhouse Magazine has a whole subsection devoted to steampunk<\/a>, with loads of lovely photos (occasionally NSFW).<\/p>\n The Steampunk Tribune<\/a> is a lovely news and resource site devoted to all things steamy and punky.<\/p>\n The Traveler’s Steampunk Blog<\/a> is a personal blog, skewed slightly toward Lovecraftian steampunk.<\/p>\n Steampunk Scholar<\/a> is a neat site which centers on steampunk in literature and media. In a somewhat similar vein, Steamed!<\/a> is devoted to writing steampunk fiction.<\/p>\n There are at least two LiveJournal communities devoted to steampunk clothing, Steamfashion<\/a> and Steamy Stitches<\/a> (which is more focused on buying and selling than general fashion). There’s also a Steampunk Fashion Flickr group<\/a>, and Divine Caroline recently featured a collection of steampunk clothing<\/a>.<\/p>\n Threadbanger did a Week of Steampunk<\/a> feature, providing directions for making several accessories.<\/p>\n Brass Goggles<\/a> is “a blog and forum devoted to the lighter side of all things Steampunk.”<\/p>\n Steampunk Magazine<\/a> is a rather nice Webzine, with the stated goal of promoting steampunk as a culture rather than simply a sub-category of fiction.<\/p>\n Writer Richard Morgan (not Broken Angels<\/i> Richard Morgan, some other Richard Morgan) was commissioned by the New York Times<\/i> to write a piece on steampunk culture, which was then cut for reasons unknown. He’s posted the article online<\/a>, and it has some lovely ideas for adding steampunk elements to the home. (Incidentally, the Times<\/i> eventually ran its own piece on steampunk<\/a>, which includes some interesting links.)<\/p>\n Game company Three Rings Design commissioned Because We Can<\/a> to convert some open office space into an environment modeled on Captain Nemo’s Victorian submarine<\/a>. Probably out of range of most budgets, but there are some great detail ideas that might be of use.<\/p>\n Steampunk.com<\/a> bills itself as “an online home for the Steampunk movement in all its forms,” but their archives are currently rather scanty.<\/p>\n Finally, there are (of course) plenty of steampunk conventions, from Gaslight Gathering<\/a> to Nova Albion<\/a> to Steamcon<\/a>.
