{"id":14351,"date":"2014-01-23T06:35:22","date_gmt":"2014-01-23T11:35:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shadowmanor.com\/blog\/?p=14351"},"modified":"2014-01-20T15:01:24","modified_gmt":"2014-01-20T20:01:24","slug":"diy-hand-of-glory-prop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shadowmanor.com\/blog\/?p=14351","title":{"rendered":"DIY Hand of Glory Prop"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shadowmanor.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/finishedhand-92x150.jpg\" alt=\"Hand of Glory\" width=\"92\" height=\"150\" class=\"contentimg\" \/>I&#8217;ve been fascinated by Hands of Glory ever since I first read about them in <i>The House with a Clock in its Walls<\/i>, and when Dave Lowe <a href=\"http:\/\/davelowe.blogspot.com\/2012\/03\/hand-of-glory-prop.html\">posted<\/a> a prop he&#8217;d made, that was the motivation to try my hand (har!) at something similar.<\/p>\n<p>A Hand of Glory is the mummified (sometimes pickled) hand of a hanged criminal; it&#8217;s often specified as being the left (&#8220;sinister&#8221;) hand, or if he were hanged for murder, the hand that &#8220;did the deed.&#8221;  It&#8217;s topped with a candle made from his fat mixed with virgin beeswax; in some traditions his hair is used as a wick.  It is variously described as making its holder invisible, rendering anyone who sees it motionless, or causing the residents of a house to remain asleep as long as it&#8217;s present inside; sometimes it&#8217;s also credited with the power to unlock doors.  Such a device would, obviously, be of great use to burglars or others who wish to remain undetected.<\/p>\n<p>I wanted to make my hand a little less cartoony-looking than Lowe&#8217;s version, but I quite liked his notion of crudely lashing the forearm to a candlestick; it looks just like the sort of jury-rigging born of convenience.<\/p>\n<p>I used the same pantyhose-and-glue method as for my <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shadowmanor.com\/blog\/?page_id=4666\">mummified fairy<\/a>, and I&#8217;m quite pleased with the result.
