{"id":18371,"date":"2013-05-14T06:36:54","date_gmt":"2013-05-14T11:36:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shadowmanor.com\/blog\/?p=18371"},"modified":"2013-05-03T17:48:53","modified_gmt":"2013-05-03T22:48:53","slug":"incredible-steampunk-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shadowmanor.com\/blog\/?p=18371","title":{"rendered":"Incredible Steampunk Home"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shadowmanor.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/modvic.jpg\" alt=\"Steampunk Home Office\" width=\"214\" height=\"320\" class=\"contentimg\" \/>This is pretty much the ultimate in &#8220;committing to the bit.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Bruce and Melanie Rosenbaum own an old Victorian home near Boston, and a few years ago they decided to modernize their kitchen whilst retaining the original antique vibe: In other words, they steampunked it.  And they liked the result so much that they: a) Went on to do the rest of the house in the same style; b) Bought a nearby house to steampunk and resell; c) Launched a business devoted to steampunk interior decorating.<\/p>\n<p>Their stuff is simply gorgeous, and makes one long for enough cash to attempt something similar.  Sadly, I seem to have a dearth of rich relatives who are likely to mention me in their will, so the best I can do is drool over the Rosenbaums&#8217; house.<\/p>\n<p>There are lots of photos of the house at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.apartmenttherapy.com\/bruce-melanies-128693\">Apartment Therapy<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/steampunkworkshop.com\/visit-steampunked-home\">Steampunk Workshop<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.houzz.com\/projects\/204859\/Bruce-and-Melanie-Rosenbaum\">Houzz<\/a>, plus a short article about their renovation efforts <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boston.com\/lifestyle\/house\/gallery\/steampunking\/\">here<\/a>.  There&#8217;s also a video tour:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/28509238?title=0&amp;byline=0&amp;color=ffffff\" width=\"425\" height=\"239\" frameborder=\"0\" webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The company they launched is <a href=\"http:\/\/modvic.com\/\">ModVic<\/a>, and the site&#8217;s gallery has photos of several of their commissions (including a tattoo station made out of an antique gas pump).<\/p>\n<p>A couple of references on other sites are more puzzling: Trial by Steam <a href=\"http:\/\/trialbysteam.com\/2010\/08\/31\/bruce-and-melanie-rosenbaum-sign-book-deal\/\">reported<\/a> that the Rosenbaums had signed a book deal with a working title of <i>Steampunk Art, Fashion &#038; Design<\/i>, to be published in Summer\/Fall of 2012.  However, I can&#8217;t seem to find any other information about it, so I&#8217;m not sure if the book was scrapped or just delayed.  Additionally, Wicked Local&#8217;s 2010 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wickedlocal.com\/sharon\/news\/x298222725\/Steampunk-Victorian-home-breathes-new-quirky-life-into-antiques\">article<\/a> about the Rosenbaums noted that they had launched a site called steampuffin.com, &#8220;offering Steampunk appliances, gadgets and fixtures to online shoppers.&#8221;  Unfortunately, that URL goes nowhere.  (There&#8217;s a link for &#8220;Steampuffin Exhibitions&#8221; on the ModVic site, but that goes to a &#8220;Coming Soon&#8221; page, which I roundly loathe.)<\/p>\n<p>Steampunk fits nicely into the Victorian milieu, but is somewhat less daunting to outsiders (and rather more landlord-friendly) than a Gorey-esque decorating scheme.
