{"id":3171,"date":"2009-06-04T07:57:59","date_gmt":"2009-06-04T11:57:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shadowmanor.com\/blog\/?p=3171"},"modified":"2009-06-01T14:46:02","modified_gmt":"2009-06-01T18:46:02","slug":"warning-posters-as-art","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shadowmanor.com\/blog\/?p=3171","title":{"rendered":"Warning Posters as Art"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shadowmanor.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/warning.gif\" alt=\"Warning\" title=\"Warning\" width=\"113\" height=\"129\" class=\"contentimg\" \/>After running across <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kottke.org\/09\/04\/it-hurts-when-i-pee\">this<\/a> rather arresting&#8211;but artistic&#8211;warning sign, it occurred to me that it and similar signs would make attractive and unusual decorations.<\/p>\n<p>A quick search should turn up quite a number of them, but you can also check places like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.warning-sign.com\/\">Safety First!<\/a> for loads of examples.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.orau.org\/ptp\/collection\/hpposters\/hpposters.htm\">These<\/a> vintage radiation warning posters, <a href=\"http:\/\/digital.lib.umn.edu\/IMAGES\/reference\/swhp\/SWHP0186.jpg\">this<\/a> &#8220;mental hygiene&#8221; sign (from the <a href=\"http:\/\/special.lib.umn.edu\/swha\/IMAGES\/home.html\">University of Minnesota<\/a> collection) and <a href=\"http:\/\/oohara.mt.tama.hosei.ac.jp\/sangyofukuri\/enpos1352.html\">&#8220;dangers of unkept hair&#8221;<\/a> warning (from <a href=\"http:\/\/oohara.mt.tama.hosei.ac.jp\/sangyofukuri\/index.html\">this site<\/a>) would all be attractive artworks.  Copy shops like Kinko&#8217;s can print good-quality oversize pictures, so you could have these blown up to poster size and framed.<\/p>\n<p>You can also find similar pictures commerically available, particularly propaganda-style posters from WWII.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.posters.com\/pv-377291_Warning-Consider-the-Consequences--.html\">This<\/a> &#8220;Consider the Consequences&#8221; print is attractive, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.allposters.com\/gallery.asp?startat=\/getposter.asp&#038;APNum=1864421&#038;CID=0F3BB79DDD19425DAFDADB1F9E606EA2&#038;PPID=1&#038;search=warning&#038;f=t&#038;FindID=0&#038;P=2&#038;PP=12&#038;sortby=PD&#038;cname=&#038;SearchID=\">this<\/a> German poster is definitely eye-catching.<\/p>\n<p>If you want something a little more spare and modern, look for unusual examples of the type in the thumbnail above (that one came from a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nasd\/docs\/d001801-d001900\/d001876\/d001876.html\">chipper\/shredder warning<\/a>).  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.symbols.net\/danger\/\">symbols.net<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.freesignage.co.uk\/hazard_warning_signs.php\">freesignage.co.uk<\/a> have some good resources.<\/p>\n<p>You could even do a collection of prints, all on, say, a VD-awareness theme.
