Aunt Bat has some Goth decorating tips, including some suggestions about what to do when the place ain’t yours.

Use a light-weight fabric like tulle, muslin or thin cotton to cover the walls from top to bottom. The best technique for this is to staple the fabric along the wall at the ceiling, gathering as you go. Once a panel is stapled to the top of the wall, simply hold it taut and staple it at the bottom. Repeat this procedure across the wall, and if desired, all the way around the room.

Whether you’re on a tight budget or just into shabby chic, second-hand furnishings and decorative items can add a lot of character to your home. (Second-hand items are also great for projects like picture frames and display cases). Garbage Scout is built on the principle that free is even better than cheap: It’s a series of interactive Google Maps for several major cities, and trash hounds list the location of interesting items that are being thrown away.

There doesn’t seem to be a comprehensive city list (the main Garbage Scout domain doesn’t resolve to anything), but a bit of internet sleuthing should tell you whether your city is listed. Here are New York, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, to get you started.

If there were a way to tongue-kiss an entire retail organization, I would be among the first to have the Oriental Trading Company in a close embrace. They have novelties, party supplies, crafts, toys, all dirt cheap. Go to their site, do a search on “skull” or “spider,” and allow your mind to be blown by the possibilities.

Whilst nosing about for ready-made plaster skulls for a project (which I’ll be posting about soon), I ran into this nice how-to guide, copiously illustrated, for making your own little skulls out of polymer clay. The step-by-step guide is so thorough that I’m tempted to take a crack at making a few, even though I am utterly hopeless where sculpting is concerned.
