Cut one 6″ x 4″ and two 3″ x 4″ pieces of flesh-colored fabric. Cut one 6″ x 4″ piece of contrast fabric.
Make a pattern for the panties out of a 2″ x 3″ piece of paper. Trace a round object (like the edge of a saucer) along the longer edge for the “leg hole.” Fold the contrast fabric in quarters and cut out the semicircle.
Stay-stitch 1/4″ from the semicircular cutouts. Clip the fabric at short intervals up to the stitching line. Fold under and press.
Lay the “panties” on top of the larger piece of flesh-colored fabric. Baste along raw edges, then stitch close to the turned-under edges.
Lay one of the smaller pieces of fabric right-side up, then lay the zipper (zipper side up) along the 4″ edge. Lay the fabric you’ve just stitched right-side down on top. The end of the zipper will stick out past the end of the fabric; we’ll take care of that in a minute.
Stitch through all layers using a zipper foot, then fold the fabric back from the zipper, press, and topstitch close to the edge.
Stitch several times over the end of the zipper right at the edge of the fabric, then cut off the excess zipper below the stitching. (Don’t try this with a metal zipper; it will lead to heartbreak.)
Repeat the layering and stitching with the other small piece of fabric and the other side of the larger piece. Fold back and topstitch.
Place the two shorter pieces of fabric right sides together, lining up the zipper seams (the larger piece will be folded in half). Stitch the long sides of both pieces of fabric and the short side of the lining, leaving a place in the middle for turning. (Note: Take care stitching over the zipper, lest you break your needle.) Clip corners.
Turn right-side out through the hole in the lining, then fold in the raw edges and stitch closed.
Push the lining to the inside and press. If desired, hand-sew a little embellishment such as a small ribbon rose or bow to one corner.
