The Art of Darkness

Black Spirits and White…

…also red, but no grey that I’m aware of.

John pointed me to this list of Halloween-themed cocktails on Dabbled, which makes a nice segue into Cobwebs’ Big List o’ Booze(tm) that I’ve been meaning to post.

I got married on Halloween, and one of the many bits of research I did involved finding thematic beer brands. That list is posted over at Halloweddings. I also served a couple of brands of hard cider and (it almost goes without saying) Vampire Wine.

If you’re looking for spirits for a Halloween party (or just to drink any time; what’s the point in being goth if you can’t be spooky at unexpected moments?), that list should give you a leg up. A few thematic beers that have popped up since I compiled the list include:

Hard alcohol choices (besides absinthe, duh) would include Blavod, REDRUM, and Black Death Vodka.

If you sometimes drink…wine, look around for some of these (note that some are more widely available than others):

  • Cardinal Zin and Heart of Darkness, both from Bonny Doon
  • Any of the wines offered by Casillero del Diablo, which means “Cellar of the Devil”
  • Eye of the Toad Rose, Toad Hollow
  • Sinister Hand, Avalon Wine
  • Witches Brew, Leelanau Cellars
  • Poizin, from Armida. Extra points for being packed in a coffin-shaped box.
  • Pumpkin wine (yes really), Maple River Winery
  • Any of the wines from Sasquatch Cellars
  • 7 Deadly Zins, Michael-David Vineyards
  • Phantom, Bogle Vineyards (or anything else from them, really; they take their name from a variant of “boggart”)
  • Any of the wines from Devil’s Lair
  • Dead Arm Shiraz, d’Arenberg
  • Dragonstone Riesling, Josef Leitz
  • Hell N Back Zinfandel, Pacific Edge
  • Wild Witch Shiraz, Trevor Jones
  • Heebie Jeebie Cabernet Sauvignon, Heebie Jeebie Wines
  • Wines from Zeller Schwarze Katz (Black Cat Cellars)
  • Evil Cabernet Sauvignon, R Winery
  • Egri Bikavér (Bull’s Blood) – This is a type of wine (from Hungary) rather than something from a particular winery.

Finally, if you’re looking for something non-alcoholic:

  • Jones Soda offers seasonal flavors like “Candy Corn” and “Lemon Drop Dead.” They also have a site where you can order various regular flavors of their soda and have your own custom photo put on the label. Right now they’re offering a limited-edition Emily the Strange soda collection.
  • The now-defunct Skeleteens soda company offered flavors like Black Lemonade and Brainwash. They’re still available from a few online suppliers, and the labels alone are worth the effort to dig up a few.

If I’ve missed any of your favorites, let me know in the comments!

O.M.G. I totally want Cardinal Zin!!! That’s even better than the Vampire wines!

(The 7 Deadly Zins is taking it a bit far…)

I’m currently mixing up some chocolate-infused vod for the big day (my bf’s bday, so it’s always a big one) for mixed choco drinks. hooray for themed drunkenness!
