A Smattering of Webcomics
As long as we’re trundling along recommending things like books and movies and whatnot, I may as well continue the trend and suggest some Webcomics that y’all might find appealing. Or not. They amuse me, anyway. (Comics with an asterisk have additional text if you mouse over the image.)
Please feel free to make your own suggestions in the comments!
Para Abnormal – Splendidly dark-and-goofy single panel comic.
Sample Comic
Hijinks Ensue* – “Geeking for the sake of geekery.”
Sample Comic
Indexed* – Humor by way of charts, graphs, and similar infographics.
Sample Comic
A Softer World* – Rather than illustrations, this comic is comprised of photographs with odd, often dark, text.
Sample Comic
Liō – Pantomime strip involving the adventures of a little boy for whom weird, dark, supernatural stuff is loads of fun.
Sample Comic
Oglaf!* – NSFW. The setting is kind of a quasi-D&D milieu, with the occasional monster and barbarian warrior and whatnot. Mostly hilariously dirty. Some storylines are multi-page, so keep an eye on the navigation.
Sample Comic
Basic Instructions – “How-to” advice, amusingly illustrated.
Sample Comic
Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal – Random geekery, with no set format. There’s a bonus joke if you hover over the red button at the bottom left of the comic.
Sample Comic
Medium Large – Peculiar, often dark, pop-culture-y sort of…thing.
Sample Comic
Savage Chickens – Cartoons drawn on sticky notes, heavy on the chickens.
Sample Comic
Dork Tower – The adventures of a group of geeks (mostly human, with the occasional muskrat). Lots of gaming jokes.
Sample Comic
Scenes from a Multiverse* – Each comic explores some new corner of the vastness that is the Multiverse.
Sample Comic
Shoebox Blog – The artists/writers who create cards for Hallmark’s Shoebox division have a blog where they post random illustrations, “funny, but no” rejected card ideas, and other silliness.
Sample Comic
Surviving the World – “A Photocomic Education.” (There’s no additional text in the mouseover, but there’s an extra punchline in the “File Under:” line beneath the comic and another one in each comic’s description on the archive page.)
Sample Comic
Text From Dog – “My dog sends me texts. I post them here. Yeah, it’s weird.”
Sample Comic
The Non-Adventures of Wonderella* – Imagine if Wonder Woman was completely cynical about her job and kind of a smartass. That.
Sample Comic
Cyanide and Happiness – Simply-drawn comic which sometimes explores rather dark, edgy themes.
Sample Comic
Tree Lobsters!* – Geeky comic about wisecracking lobsters in a tree. I swear this actually makes sense.
Sample Comic
Wondermark* – Absurdist strip created using 19th-Century woodcuts and engravings, .
Sample Comic
xkcd* – “A webcomic of romance, sarcasm, math, and language.”

My personal favourites:
Nimona: http://gingerhaze.com/nimona
Evil villain gets a smartass, shapesifting teenage girl demanding to be his sidekick.
Manly Guys Doing Manly Things: http://thepunchlineismachismo.com/
For fans of action movies and gaming. Actually created by a lady.
Girls with Slingshots: http://www.girlswithslingshots.com/
Not even slightly spooky (well, except for the talking cactus and ghost cat that make cameos), but a proper adult world comic full of dirty jokes and people of varied sexualities.
Questionable Content: http://www.questionablecontent.net/
Pretty similar to GWS, but with a male lead rather than female. But there’s a few snarky goths and the main character’s mother is a dominatrix and former porn star…

I forgot about A Softer World. I’m going to have to go through the archives now and work out where I left off.
I also forgot about Oglaf! I think I’ll wait until other people aren’t sitting around me before I go through those archives.
In gratitude I present to you, The Adventures of Dr McNinja. He’s a doctor AND a ninja. He has a gorilla for a nurse. He rides velociraptors. He fights pirates.

It’s a serial, so you won’t have a clue what’s going on, but that’s sometimes the best way to get into it :)

Oh, good. You did put Surviving the World on there. I was about to become concerned.
