The Wurst Gallery
The Wurst Gallery is an online showcase designed to expose artists to a much wider community than they would otherwise enjoy.
Each section of the gallery has a theme–artists being asked to decorate nesting dolls, for instance–and I particularly like their Vintage Vandals theme: Each artist was instructed to find artwork at a thrift store and use it as a base for their own work. Strange beings loom above mundane landscapes and monsters invade still lifes. Mouse over each image to see the artist’s alterations.
I think it goes without saying that this is an idea just begging to be exploited. Next time you see one of those black-velvet paintings of waiflike children with eyes the size of manhole covers, snap it up and “improve” it.
